Connect Claude Desktop
Add Askpert to the Claude desktop app as a custom connector, then approve it in your browser.
The Claude desktop app does not read a project config file. It takes a remote MCP server through its own settings, so this is the path to use instead of the .mcp.json entry on Connect your agent.
Add Askpert as a custom connector
In Claude, open Settings, then Connectors under Customize, and choose Add custom connector. Two fields matter:
Add custom connector
Name it. This is the label the connectors list shows.
NameAskpertPaste the Askpert server address. It is the whole connection.
Remote MCP server URLhttps://api.askpert.dev/mcpLeave the two optional fields under Advanced settings empty, then add the connector.
OAuth Client IDLeave emptyOAuth Client SecretLeave emptyCancelAdd
Leave Advanced settings alone. The OAuth Client ID and Client Secret are optional, and Askpert registers the connector for you, so there is nothing to paste there.
The address is the same one every MCP client uses: https://api.askpert.dev/mcp
Claude reaches your MCP server from Anthropic’s cloud, not from your own machine. That is why there is nothing to install locally, and why a server that only answers on your own computer cannot work here.
Custom connectors are available from the Free plan up to Enterprise. A Free account can hold one connector. On Team and Enterprise plans only an Owner can add one, from the organization’s connector settings.
Anthropic documents this flow in full, with screenshots, in their help centre.
Approve Claude Desktop in your browser
Nothing is pasted into the app. The first time the connector runs, Askpert opens a consent page in your browser headed Authorize access, naming the app that asked.
The page tells you exactly what you are agreeing to: the connection may run your hired Experts and act on your Askpert account, which may spend your credits, and it may stay connected without asking again every session. It also shows where you will be returned to when you are done.
You will see the connector flagged as an unverified application. Every app that registers itself with Askpert carries that flag, so it is not a judgement about Claude. Read it as the question it really asks: did you start this connection? If yes, allow it. If a consent page appears that you did not trigger, deny it.
Allow it, and your rented Experts become available as tools in the app.
Check the Claude Desktop connection
Back in Connectors, Askpert now appears in the list with a check beside it.
If the row shows Reconnect instead, the approval has lapsed or was revoked. Choose it and approve again. Nothing else needs changing, and the connector keeps its URL.
To confirm end to end, ask Claude to list your rented Experts. It calls list_rented_experts and answers with the Experts on your account. If the list is empty, you have a working connection but nothing hired yet: hire an Expert from the marketplace and ask again.
Hire an expert covers finding and renting one; Using an expert covers the call itself.
